Free to start: Payhip and Lemon Squeezy

Payhip says every plan has the same features, including Free Forever, so a pattern store can open there at no monthly price; PayPal or Stripe charge their own rates on every plan. Lemon Squeezy is $0 a month with 5% plus 50 cents a sale, and its pricing page says there is no trial, contract or card needed. Its docs say that fee covers card transaction fees.

No monthly fee, a bigger cut: Gumroad

Gumroad keeps 10% plus $0.50 of each direct sale and 30% when a new customer comes through its Discover marketplace. Its help center says the direct-sale fee does not include card processing. Gumroad acts as merchant of record for all sales, so it handles tax collection and remittance. Gumroad alternatives sets six other platforms against that cut.

Monthly plans: Sellfy, Stan Store and Podia

  • Sellfy Starter: $29 a month, or $22 a month on yearly billing, for up to $10k in sales a year, with a possible 2% overage fee above a plan's limit.
  • Stan Creator: $29 a month, or $300 a year, per Stan's help center.
  • Podia Mover: $49 a month, or $42 a month on yearly billing; Shaker is $99 a month, or $84 a month on yearly billing, with no Podia fees.

Sellfy, Stan and Podia all leave PayPal or Stripe processing charges on top.

Taxes: who collects them for you

Payhip's help says it handles sales tax in the US on a seller's behalf from July 1, 2026, and its pricing page says it collects and remits EU and UK VAT; the help also says a seller may still need to file a state return. Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy both say they act as merchant of record. These are the vendors' statements, not tax advice.

Best platform for beginners

In the table, three platforms say a beginner can start without entering a card: Payhip's pricing page says no credit card is required for Free Forever, Lemon Squeezy says it is free to start, and Podia's 14-day trial asks for no card. Payhip's entry takes 5% a sale and has no monthly price. See best platform to sell digital products for free for the free tiers side by side and where to sell digital patterns for pattern sellers.
