Big files and many sizes: what each platform takes

A multi-size sewing pattern can ship as several files: the sizes plus print-at-home, copy-shop and projector versions. Payhip lets one product hold several files and says each can be up to 5GB. Etsy's digital listings take five files at 20MB each. Sellfy allows 50 files in one product, with 10GB per file on Starter. Stan Store supports files up to 5GB.

One Payhip limit to plan around is PDF stamping, which prints the buyer's email and purchase date at the top left of each page. Payhip's help says it works only for portrait PDFs, and its setting covers files below 250MB, so a landscape or larger pattern file is outside what it covers. See Payhip upload limit for the file rules.

Sizes, print formats and each purchase option

Payhip calls an option a variant: a version of one product with its own name, price, description and assigned files. The designer makes one product, adds a variant for each file set and ticks which files belong to it. A List layout cannot show variant descriptions, and a seller can fix a wrong variant on an order with the Edit button.

Warning: deleting a variant keeps its files for past buyers, but deleting a file itself removes it from their download pages. Etsy's help says you can't offer variations for digital items. Sellfy's help describes a Variants section and names no plan for it. Payhip vs Etsy compares the two for pattern sellers.

Sending a corrected pattern to past buyers

On Payhip, once you replace a file, earlier buyers reach the updated version through their original download link, with no second purchase. Telling them is a separate step: an email update goes to all customers or to the buyers of one product.

Payhip's email update help says an EU or UK customer who does not tick the update checkbox at checkout is not on the update list. Sellfy lets you change the product file and email buyers who opted in. Etsy's help does not say whether a replaced file reaches earlier buyers.

Fees on each pattern sale

Payhip takes 5% on Free Forever and 2% on Plus, Pro at $99 a month has no Payhip fee, and PayPal or Stripe charge their own rates on every plan. Etsy adds payment processing of 3% plus $0.25 with a US bank account, and its help names a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee with no amount given on its help pages.

A sewing pattern with several sizes can go up on Payhip's Free Forever plan, which asks for no card and takes 5% when it sells. For more platforms, see where to sell digital patterns.
