Is Payhip legit? Payments, taxes and refunds explained

Last reviewed 6 October 2026

Quick answerPayhip's own pages show a working setup: each sale goes straight to your PayPal or Stripe account, and Payhip says it collects US sales tax and EU and UK VAT for you. Sellers who want all tax handled can pick Gumroad.

Is Payhip legit? What its own pages show

Payhip's own pages describe a working setup: each sale is paid to your payment processor, such as PayPal or Stripe, and its Terms of Use name the operating company as Payhip Limited, a company incorporated in England and Wales. Payhip says it was created in 2011. That is Payhip's account of itself, read on 6 October 2026, not an outside rating. Sellers pay $0 a month on Free Forever plus a 5% transaction fee.

Is Payhip safe for sellers: where the money goes

Payhip requires a connected payment processor, such as PayPal or Stripe, before a seller can sell, and says it deposits each sale into that account straight away. Its help center adds that Payhip does not hold the funds.

How fast the money reaches a bank follows the processor. Payhip's help center says Stripe payouts go to a bank account daily by default, PayPal withdrawals must be started by hand by default, and a first Stripe payment stays pending for a few days.

Taxes Payhip collects for you

Payhip says it has handled US sales tax on the seller's behalf from July 1, 2026, at no cost. Its help center adds that a seller may still need to file a state sales tax return, and that some states tax digital products while others do not. For EU and UK VAT, Payhip's pricing FAQ says it is fully compliant to collect and remit the tax automatically.

Gumroad says it has handled all of a seller's tax obligations since January 1, 2025, and Lemon Squeezy says it is your merchant of record. A seller who wants that arrangement should read Payhip vs Gumroad.

Refunds and who the buyer pays

Refunds happen in PayPal or Stripe, not in Payhip, which its help center says cannot issue refunds directly; each seller sets their own refund policy.

A seller can cancel an account whenever they like, per Payhip's pricing FAQ, and deleting an account permanently removes the content and products. Payhip's Terms of Use, last updated on 19 February 2018, name no plan fee, refund or cancellation of fees. Its help center lists copyright infringement among content it does not allow and says an account selling against its terms can be permanently deleted without prior notice.

How buyers pay and get the file

Payhip's pricing page names PayPal and card payments, and its gateway pages add Apple Pay, Google Pay and local methods that depend on the processor and the buyer's country.

Each customer gets a unique download link, Payhip says, and anyone opening it must verify an email address before the download page opens.

Pick Payhip for a store of your own with the processor paying you directly; pick Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy if you want the platform to handle tax. A seller can see all of this from the inside on the Free Forever plan, which takes no credit card and carries a 5% Payhip fee per sale. The Payhip review and what is Payhip cover the rest.
