Side-by-side comparison

PDF or ZIP: choose the least confusing package

Last materially reviewed 2026-09-27

Quick answerUse direct files for a simple package; use an archive only when its organisation helps more than the extra extraction step hurts.
Likely to work well when

✓ Independent pattern designers

✓ Existing catalogues with confusing file choices

✓ Readers comparing direct stores and marketplaces

Important limitations

— Guaranteed passive income

— Pattern drafting or technical certification

— Generic course launches

— A marketplace traffic guarantee

What to know

A direct file has a simple job

A single PDF is often easier to recognise and open than an archive containing that same PDF. When a package has several essential parts, separate labelled downloads may still be clearer. Choose from the buyer’s task rather than the convenience of dragging your working folder into an uploader.

What to know

An archive needs an explanation

A ZIP can preserve a group of related files, but buyers must extract it before using its contents. Official Etsy help explicitly discusses that extra step for digital purchases. Do not assume every phone user knows where extracted files went. Provide a short readme and name the starting document.

What to know

Do not hide incompatible material

Compressing a file does not make it usable in a buyer’s application. Keep formats, language and any software requirements visible before checkout. Never bundle executable helpers or unnecessary scripts into a pattern package just because an upload route permits an archive. The buyer should not need to weaken device security to read a pattern.

What to know

Check the final archive itself

Build the customer archive from a clean release folder, not your entire design workspace. Inspect its file list, confirm there are no private notes, and check that the readme describes the actual contents. Preserve the exact released archive for support. These are recommended preparation steps, not a claim that we tested a merchant purchase.

What to know

An original working example

Before creating an archive, sort the release folder into essential, optional and internal-only material. Only the first two categories belong in the customer package. A fictional archive containing an instruction PDF, a print file and a readme is easy to explain; an archive containing drafts, backups and several files called final is not. Include a short contents list outside the archive when possible so a buyer knows what to expect before extracting it. If the same document is supplied directly and inside the ZIP, identify that duplication. Otherwise a buyer may reasonably assume that two differently located copies contain different instructions.

What this comparison can—and cannot—settle

This guide draws on Adding a digital product, Etsy digital downloads. Merchant-controlled records describe the provider’s own capabilities, terms or standards; they do not independently validate those claims. These records do not establish independent confirmation of the product claims.

Verify any current price, plan limit, label direction, compatibility rule, or commercial term that would materially change the decision. The dated source ledger shows the underlying records so this conclusion can be checked and updated.
