Identify what exists at checkout
A ready-made package and a personalised deliverable have different completion conditions. If a buyer receives only instructions for the next step, make that explicit. A payment confirmation should not say that the finished custom pattern is ready when production has not begun.
Use the documented boundary
Payhip’s custom-order guidance describes collecting relevant answers and manually delivering personalised files. That is not an automatic production service. A seller still needs to evaluate requirements, manage revisions and supply the promised result. Do not imply that adding checkout questions removes these responsibilities.
Minimise sensitive collection
Ask only for information genuinely needed for the authorised custom task, using an appropriate private route. Do not make this affiliate guide a place to collect measurements or personal files. If the task requires specialist judgement, privacy safeguards or legal advice, obtain that support rather than improvising a generic form.
Keep the catalogue coherent
Label ready-made and custom offers distinctly, with realistic turnaround and support expectations. A standard pattern store may be unsuitable if most work is individually commissioned. Choose the operating process first; a low software fee should not conceal an unmanageable delivery commitment.
An original working example
Use a status note that distinguishes order received, requirements understood, work in progress, file supplied and revision closed. These are original operational labels, not claimed Payhip statuses. A fictional customer who has paid but has not yet supplied an essential requirement should not receive a completed-delivery message. State what input is missing and the legitimate way to provide it. Do not collect more personal information than the task needs, and do not place private measurements in a public order note. If custom work becomes the main business, assess a process designed for commissioned services rather than assuming a digital-download catalogue can absorb every exception.
